Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an extensively researched integrative psychotherapy that has proven effective for the treatment of trauma/PTSD and other types of psychological distress including anxiety, depression, panic attacks, guilt, anger, sleep disturbances, performance anxiety, and complicated grief. During EMDR therapy, the therapist collaboratively guides the client through a protocol where the client attends to emotionally disturbing material while simultaneously focusing on lateral eye movements, tactile, or audio stimulation. Information is processed in a way that allows the brain to activate it's natural healing and become adaptive with new learning and development of cognitive insights. Within this process, there is a removal of emotional disturbance, and unhealthy negative beliefs are replaced by healthy positive beliefs. EMDR helps clients heal from chronic symptoms and enhances emotional resources such as self-esteem and confidence.
